Accomplished abstract poet. Early architect of electronic-infused beatscapes. Founding member of legendary left-field rap act Anti-Pop Consortium. Childhood Kiss fan. So reads the résumé of the estimable Beans, a New York native raised in the suburb of White Plains. Born in '71, Beans came of age alongside hip-hop. As for siblings, he had one of each. His mother was a dietician, and though his father succumbed to cancer when Beans was 10, he passed on a library of books and records that his son subsequently devoured.
Rap's echoes came through the radio courtesy of DJ Red Alert. Beans' mother forbade trips to the city to catch Marley Marl in action, but the action eventually came to the 'burbs, as his Bronx-based cousins brought wax with them when they came out to trim the hedges. Holed up in the seat of Westchester County, young Beans was privy to what his neighbors in Yonkers and New Rochelle were up to. In school, DMX freestyle tapes and Brand Nubian mixes were traded like baseball cards. He'd taken a shine to DJing at 17, but switched to rhyming as it required no equipment. He'd long been into comic books and drawing, so Beans eventually went to college for fine art. While there, he discovered the burgeoning slam poetry scene, and made a name for himself at the Rap Meets Poetry series in SoHo. That's where the future members of Anti-Pop first witnessed him in action.
As an emcee, Beans has very few peers outside his circle. Within the Consortium, his rapid staccato and distinct lyrical bent - a mix of classic rap braggadocio and fractured new school narrative - helped vault that group into cult and critical favor circa '99 alongside artists from Anticon and Def Jux. Beans also honed his own beat-making style in the group, citing seminal No-Wavers Suicide as his main influence (with nods to Sun Ra, Mantronix, Sonic Youth, Public Enemy and Autechre). Together with High Priest, M.Sayyid and Earl Blaize, Anti-Pop made four albums for labels as acclaimed as Warp Records and Big Dada, opened for Radiohead on the band's Amnesiac tour, and broke up in 2002.
Over the course of three solo albums, Beans mastered his craft. Tomorrow Right Now, 2003, found him laying arty verbal swagger over skronky minimal tracks. Two years later, on Shock City Maverick, he'd doubled down on both counts, sounding more confident, fuller. And on 2008's Thorns, Beans exorcised some spiritual demons, delivering his most personal work to date. Tours and festivals came, EPs and singles too, and eventually, so did the Anti-Pop reunion. At the same time Beans was working with his old partners on their praised comeback LP, Fluorescent Black (2009), he was carefully assembling the bits and pieces that would become his 2011 Anticon debut, End It All.

Gobby (DJ Set)
Gobby depends on his music to ward off irritability and paranoia. What matters isn't the genre, or tools, but the time spent problem solving in solitude. Right now Gobby's focused on dark techno, but his influence is always shifting. He is consistently at work in Harlem as beat maker & producer, currently tracking with artists like Mykki Blanco (see "Betty Rubble"), Jamie Krasner, Le1f, and Cadence Weapon. His live set consists of an SP-404 and his drums, which he has been playing for 11 years. His equally deep catalog, is archived through a timeless YouTube channel & broken Megaupload links.
His signing and first EP on UNO is the result of his new Detroit/Berghain phase, however pre ('08-'12) and post ('12-??) productions are set to surface in the near future. Trying to define Gobby is besides the point – you only introduce him and we are unreservedly proud to do so. The DJ/producer/vocalist CX KIDTRONIK makes explosively danceable throwback hip-hop, meshed with electro and metal. He counts Kanye West, Saul Williams and Trent Reznor among his fans, and has worked with each. “He is a character,” says Reznor. “He’s also one of those guys, when he’s around, things start to happen.”
First, about the “krak.” CX once saw Jody Watley squat for a split second to pick up a tambourine at a Central Park performance – at the height of the low-rise jeans era – and it was all over from there. The newfound obsession with accidental crack was put to music in his 2006 debut album Krak Attack, a pledged allegiance to the sag. His Stones Throw release Krak Attack 2: Ballad Of Elli Skiff takes a more conceptual angle – the title and album artwork references a low-slung-pants-wearing New Hampshire woman, who was arrested for refusing to leave a mall.
CX – “Christopher X” – is based in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and comes from Detroit, with detours through Atlanta and Madison WI, where he was an official, bow-tie clad member of Louis Farrakhan's Nation Of Islam. But “KiDTRONiK” – the name – is pure NYC, a reference to ‘80s electro rap group Mantronix, who has heavily influenced his style.
A one-time member of Anti-Pop Consortium and Airborn Audio, he worked for years as a New York city club DJ, and has toured the planet honing his production style, playing custom-built synths, and drum machines with names like the “CX Betacrack Box” and “The Catonator,” specializing in live kicks and snares, rather than loops. He has dazzled audiences around the world with his technically proficient, yet completely chaotic performances, full of gyrating women, flashing lights, lazers, sweat and beer. In recent years CX has toured with Reznor, Saul Williams, and produced for Kanye West’s artist Consequence. What’s more, in 2010 CX became a member of German digital hardcore group Atari Teenage Riot, filling in for the late Carl Crack. (The KraK/Crack connection is purely coincidental.)
The Juggs are a psychedelic blues band hailing from Brooklyn, NY. The 2010 release The African Queen is there debut EP. The group features singer/songwriter Kareem Big Bear Bunton on vocals and guitar, George De Voe(Guitar), Nick Gonzales(Drums), and Charles Becker (Bass). Formed by Mr.Bunton in 2006, the band is often described as Chicago blues with a touch of stoner rock much inspired by Muddy Waters Electric Mud and early ZZtop. The band is currently active and touring.
